As we grow older, knowledge and experience accumulate in proportion to the time we’ve lived. That, of course, is a good thing. We become better at finding solutions before our small worries or vague anxieties even take hold. One might say we’ve learned how to anticipate the future and remove uncertainty before it arrives. Yet, looked at another way, we may also be unconsciously deciding what that future will be—foreclosing possibilities before they have a chance to exist.

“What do you want to be when you grow up?” It’s a question often asked in childhood, and no matter the answer, it was always pure. A professional athlete, a musician, a pilot, a doctor. But as adults, we tend to judge such dreams through the lens of practicality—too old, too risky, too expensive, not within reach of our abilities. In many cases, that may be true. Still, those who eventually achieve their dreams are often the ones who continue to believe in the worlds they once imagined, refusing to let go of the impossible.

As children, many of us couldn’t distinguish whether the adventures we saw on television were fiction or documentary. We believed in UMA—unidentified mysterious animals—and imagined where they lived, how large they were, what sounds they made, and what they ate. Even as we watched from our living rooms, we pictured what they might be doing right now. Adults often dismissed such notions with a laugh—“Those things don’t exist.” And perhaps they were right. But isn’t it precisely the act of imagining “something that shouldn’t exist” that makes the world a more fascinating place?

With a touch of nostalgia for that unguarded wonder—and a wish to reclaim a bit of it—we created this season’s graphic T-shirts. Continuing our fascination with rare and mythical creatures, the designs pay homage to the animal-print tees of American brands from the 1980s and ’90s. The motifs feature Nessie of Scotland’s Loch Ness, the ever-elusive Bigfoot of North America, and Japan’s own mysterious Tsuchinoko. Most adults would say these creatures are imaginary, but isn’t life far more exciting when we live as if they just might exist?

In a world that often takes itself too seriously, a sense of humor feels essential. If these T-shirts can spark even a small reminder of childhood—of dreams, curiosity, and the joyful imagination we once had—then they’ve already served their purpose.
